Lydia and Melanie - A New Direction

Lydia and Melanie were originally going to work with a Detroit Public School for their project. However, this spring break, a new passion developed in them. Melanie traveled to Belize with Wayne State’s “Belize: ProHealth: An International Health Care Experience” study abroad program. While in Belize, Melanie noticed the need for art supplies for local kids in the community. Melanie and Lydia are currently exploring ways to meet this need.

Tim - Initial Thoughts

I’m pretty sure that the project I’m doing for Catalyst will working with my friend Ogie’s church, called LifeGate Fellowship Church.  They’re a pretty small church (only about 30-40 members including the youth) and they’re moving to a new building.  Ogie and I have not made any real plans for what exactly we want to do to raise money for this, but that’s what we’re gonna try to figure out in the next couple weeks.

Meredith - Initial Thoughts

Meredith is still in the development stages of her project, but she enjoys doing large projects and organizing groups of people. Because of this, she wants to do a project that involves a lot of volunteers. She’s unsure what direction she wants to take, but she’s open to any suggestions about work that needs to be done and causes that need support or donations.

Lydia and Melanie - Initial Idea

Lydia and Melanie hope to work with a Detroit Public Elementary School. They hope to provide the school supplies they may be lacking for some students. They are currently looking for a class to partner with.

Olivia - Initial Idea

Olivia was inspired by the field trip the Catalyst group took to Central Detroit Christian’s “Peaches and Greens Produce Market”. The market was created to address the problem of healthy food access in the neighborhood. Many consider Detroit a “food desert”, a place without access to adequate food. No chain grocery store exists in the entire city. Over 90% of food stamps in the city are spent at gas stations or convenience stores. This fact is responsible for many health consequences, including obesity and type II diabetes.

Olivia hopes to inform suburban residents of Metro Detroit of this great problem through “food desert” tours. Olivia is currently exploring what these tours will look like in reality.

Rhiannon and Sam - Initial Idea

I’m not sure what we’re ultimately doing but for now, we’re going to try to raise money for the Joy-Southfield clinic by doing Kickstarter [free online funding platform]. In the next few weeks, I’ll get it going and try to promote the project to other campus organizations that would be interested in donating and helping.

Jeremy - Initial Idea

I plan on using the 100 dollars to put on a benefit show for a cause that is still unknown (though donating to Joy-Southfield [free health clinic for the uninsured] is starting to sound like a good idea). I have a building that shouldn’t cost anything and I have 2 bands lined up so far. I won’t have a problem finding more. I might be doing some sort of 2-dollar open mic thing?

As of right now it’s looking like the only cost to me will be professional sound equipment and maybe some prizes for a raffle or something like that.
